Stop Apologizing, Gordon Brown

I know that Gordon Brown has never really been the guy with the smooth words and the marketable image. In fact an article about the last leadership debate in the Daily Mail was headlined “Gordon Brown looked white, wan, with a blueish tinge… like Stilton cheese”. The fact is however, that Gordon Brown has had a rough time of it as PM, and I can’t help but believe that he has been bearing an unfair burden with the best intentions. If Cameron and Clegg make leading the British government look easy with their relatively elastic skin and identical hair cuts, it’s because they have not yet been swimming in shit-river. Cameron will get there soon though, it looks like, and after three months he’ll be...

Voting in the Land of Reality T.V

Nick Clegg... or is it David Cameron? Reality television might have been invented in the United States, but it was perfected in the United Kingdom. Nothing proves this more than the recent twists in the British election. Since I last wrote about the situation in the U.K, the far-third candidate, Nick Clegg, and his Liberal Democrats have experienced a surge in popularity due entirely to a good performance in the first televised debate. Cameron must be a bit gobsmacked by this. It must be said, however, that the staff at the Daily Mail have an uncanny ability to break down what’s important in the British Election. For example, see the above photos of the political wives, Samantha Cameron and Sarah Brown. If they are both competing for the title of “totally normal, modern, British Mum”, which seems to be what people why bother listening to a word they say, and why not dissect how much they spent on their outfits instead? Well, dowdy Sarah looses this round (whoever thought those accessories were a good idea should be...

David Cameron Selling Too hard

David Cameron: Kind to Puppies Until this week, it was an accepted fact in Britain that David Cameron’s Conservatives were going to sweep Labour out of parliament.  The two parties’ policies are practically identical, either way Britain is doomed to spending cuts and higher taxes, but Cameron had the distinct advantage of not being Gordon Brown, and he was working that angle hard.  Of all the politicians in the world, few have tweaked their public personality quite as often as David Cameron.  Where he could have been dismissed as a blue-blooded Etonian, he’s managed to keep his party on the progressive side of social issues while publicising himself as a normal, if throughly modern, British dad. But in the same...
